This is a brilliantly useful piece of writing, thank you Mel! Framing this in terms of sobriety is really helpful for me (as a person who is sober from alcohol) as it gives such a permission slip to consider what the cost of using something might be, as well as what might be gained from shifting our boundaries with it. I don't use AI personally but as a therapist and a human in 2025, increased usage of it is something I'm seeing all around me as well as in my clients, some of whom are definitely reporting feeling compulsive and addicted in their usage. I'm also closely following the emerging stories of AI psychosis as a phenomenon... I know that's something I'm going to learn more about in my field as time goes on. But thank you for such a generous, thoughtful piece, and for these practical frameworks for getting started with exploring AI sobriety!

I’m somewhat reassured by the fact that my teen son and nephews all avoid AI use. The young people get it.
